Guyana has introduced a new net billing program for grid-connected rooftop solar systems up to 100 kW in size. The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) and utility company Guyana Power and Light (GPL) will manage the program through standardized contracts.

1. Key Features of Guyana Net Billing Program
The core of this program lies in its economic incentive model. Specifically, the key features include:
- ⭐ Customers earn credits for excess rooftop solar power fed back into the grid.
- ⭐ Unused credits are paid annually at 90% of the current electricity rate after settling outstanding bills.
- ⭐ Offers financial incentives to reduce energy costs and promote sustainability.
- ⭐ Solar power storage systems over 100 kW may qualify upon demonstrating maximum power demand and grid approval.
2. Supporting Initiatives
The net billing program is not the only solar policy Guyana is taking to promote solar energy. Meanwhile, the country has also implemented a number of supportive initiatives:
- ▲ GYD 885 million (US$4.2 million) approved to upgrade solar energy storage systems in 21 Amerindian villages.
- ▲ GEA is tendering solar and battery storage system installations for public buildings across four regions.
- ▲ Solar capacity reached 17 MW by end-2024 (IRENA data).
3. Why It Matters
Guyana's net billing program generates significant economic benefits for solar adopters through annual payouts. This, in combination with rural electrification and public rooftop solar PV projects, demonstrates the country's commitment to clean energy expansion and sustainable development. This combination of measures is expected to effectively stimulate the enthusiasm of residents and businesses to install solar PV storage systems and promote the popularization of domestic renewable energy to a new level.
