Residential battery storage offers significant benefits beyond just storing solar power. Swissolar's Matthias Egli stated, "Battery storage systems are a crucial aspect for Switzerland's security of [power] supply, with electricity from domestic renewable energysources. Home battery storage systems make solar battery backup for home use flexible and relieve grid strain – increasingly vital as solar is projected to cover around 14% of national energy needs this year. Essentially, a home battery backup system enhances both personal energy independence and national grid stability.
Call for National Residential Battery Storage Strategy
Swissolar urges a national strategy to accelerate battery storage for both home and grid-scale solutions. They emphasize that decentralized home battery units must play a formal role. "The necessary legal basis is in place... Now everyone must do their part," said President Jürg Grossen. This includes optimizing home battery storage systems with smart management, adapting grid tariffs, and quickly implementing market-based incentives like hourly pricing. Supporting the intelligently integrating solar battery for house systems is crucial, in addition to facilitating their access to energy markets, to avoid unnecessary grid expansion and solidify Switzerland's renewable future.
