Indian Energy wins grant for new energy storage technology demo

San Diego-based company Indian Energy LLC on Thursday said it has received a grant of over USD 5 million (EUR 4m) from the California Energy Commission for a demonstration of new energy storage technologies.

The energy developer, which is 100% owned by Native Americans, will use the funds to develop, integrate and commission hybrid modular storage systems (HMSS) as a demonstration and deployment research project for long-duration energy storage technology. The systems will use power from solar assets in the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

Three HMSS modules will be funded by California, while other government agencies and private partners will fund the remaining three. After testing the different modules, the company will scale the best system to 400 kW/4 MWh, as required per the grant.

The project is designed to find and close any final knowledge gaps in  long-duration storage’s potential grid-scale implementation.

Construction management partner on the project is local company Webcor.
